Filtering by taxonomy

Wed, 12/17/2008 - 21:51

So i've been banging my head against this problem, and I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I went so far as to do a fresh install to see if there was some conflict between different modules.

Ok so I'm trying to setup some basic categories and terms so I can cross categorize lots of different content type. For example, let say I have a content type called Board Events. I want to allow a user to create a new event and then be able to categorize for different sub-comittees on the board. SOO i went and created a Category called Board and underneath that I created two sub-committees: Audit Committee and Technology Committee. My final goal is to set various views for each committee that pull in all sorts of content based on the category. But when I try and filter utilizing the Taxonomy Super Select Ultra module nothing shows up. Here are the steps I took with a complete fresh install hopefully someone can help figure out where I'm going wrong:

  1. Install fresh copy of Drupal 5 (im stuck doing this in drupal 5)
  2. Copy over the following stable releases
    • adminrole
    • admin_menu
    • cck
    • cck_taxonomy_ssu
    • views
  3. I enabled first adminrole
  4. Then I enabled rest of the modules
  5. Then I ran update.php
  6. Then I went to the categories section and created the category
    • Board
  7. Then I created two sub terms
    • Audit Committee
    • Technology Committee
  8. Then I created a CC type, Board Events and added one field:
    • Taxonomy vocabulary (super select ultra)
  9. Then I clicked on Create new content and created three test entries
    • Filled in title and body, then checked the Audit Committee check box for two entries and checked the Technology Committee for the other entry
  10. Then I clicked on Administer > Content Managemnet > Content
  11. Under the filter section I clicked the radio category, and selected Audit Category

I would've expected that the two events would've shown up that I categorized as Audit Committee ... any thoughts I what I'm missing?

Sorry for the long post ... Mark

Taking a site from test dir to live in top dir of domain??

Sun, 12/14/2008 - 06:06

Hi all. Hope you're warm!

I've been searching for this problem, but I think I still don't know the right terms for everything in drupal. I realize this is basic stuff, but I don't know the basics.

I've been tinkering with a test site in a directory of the existing domain that it will be installed in. I'm ready to take it live, but having trouble. The only instructions I've been able to find were for creating test directories in sites that already had drupal installed in the top level of the domain.

So I've installed in "www.example.com/newtest", got everything how I want it , and now want to move to the long existing but non drupal domain "www.example.com" .

but when I do this, and change the settings file to reflect it, as instructed on the page about upgrading from a test directory to the top directory, http://drupal.org/upgrade/copying-your-test-site-via-GUI all I get is the text, and no theme, and none of the links or menus work-- just get page not found errors.

here's what I mean (I can only leave this up for about a day, this is a site for a going business)
http://www.3dstereomedia.com here's my drupal site http://www.3dstereomedia.com/newtest/

I'm guessing that the database doesn't know about the top directory. But I can't see how to tell it about it or convert it over.

Has anyone seen instructions on how to develop and create test then install a drupal site on a pre existing domain? Everything I've seen seems to assume a fresh install on a fresh domain, yet it seems obvious to me that lots of people are having to leave their old sites up and running before they can create and switch over to the Drupal site.

I think this has been the most frustrating part of Drupal for me since the beginning. I wanted to know how to do this when I started, so I wouldn't set it up in a way that wouldn't work, but it seems like I failed and I'm just going to have to write a redirect on the current index.htm page to send the viewer to the correct directory.

Thanks in advance!

Reccomendations for approach to create a User Directory

Fri, 12/12/2008 - 06:26

Hey All,

I'm working in Drupal 5x and am looking to create/expand the user profile information and then create a directory based on those users.

My requirements:
* Expand the fields to more of a typical contact (address, phone, mobile, im, email, location, web site etc)
* Only certain user roles can see content
* ordered alphabetically
* bonus would be sortable by other fields and searchable

I saw the Profile module, but that seemed to only support drupal 6.

Other folks seem to say use views/nodes, others say that this method is overkill.

Anyway any thoughts, guidance, etc would be great.

Deploy demo

Mon, 12/08/2008 - 16:03

So I'm finally at a point where I can demo some of the new deployment stuff I've been working on. Anyone wanna come to Startpad for a lunch demo this week? Maybe Wednesday? Alternately I can do it at DUG, in a side group, although I don't know what kind of space Methodologie has.

Search module

Fri, 12/05/2008 - 17:22

I'm working on a site for a client, and they want to have a site-wide search function. So I tried using the Drupal core Search module. Two problems:

(a) Several of the pages on the site are views. It appears that Search doesn't index their header/footer text, which means for instance that if you search for "doctor list", the "Doctor List" view doesn't come up in search results. Also, the database-generated parts of views aren't indexed as being part of the view page, so for instance if you search on a particular doctor's name that appears on the doctor list page, you'll get the individual doctor node but not the view that also displays it.

(b) Some of the content of the site is not really meant to be displayed as nodes, but they come up in searches. I think I can use the "Restricted Search" module http://drupal.org/project/search_block to get around this problem, but I haven't tested it -- any other solutions people have used?

This has to be a fairly common issue... Are there more useful search modules out there, that would search the generated content of pages that are actually in the navigation, for instance? I looked on drupal.org in the "Search" category, but I didn't see anything... Not sure how easy it would be to write. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jennifer

Local hosting recommendations...

Tue, 12/02/2008 - 05:18

Hey all,

I've been with Drupal Value Hosting for about a year and my account will renew for another year pretty soon. At first they were great: very Drupal-friendly setups, Seattle-based servers had wicked-short latency and I was happy. Lately, the Seattle servers regularly have loads > 50 which grinds even the most efficient site to a crawl and customer service has gone AWOL. Anyhow...

I'm looking to jump ship if I can find another local hosting option. What I'd like:

  • Seattle- or NW-based servers. I'd prefer to support a local company.
  • Allows all the usual methods of access: ftp, sftp, ssh
  • Allows .htaccess
  • Unlimited (or really high limits) domains, subdomains, email accounts, MySQL servers
  • Good customer service

I'm hoping to keep my annual hosting costs to around $150 (currently I'm at $120/year). Ideally, I'd like a hosting company that has an option for reseller accounts as that's the direction a lot of my business if moving towards. So, kind of a long-winded way of asking what hosting company people are using and are they happy with it.

Sorry, I should know better than to post after the second glass of wine...

Thanks for your help!

Barnraising Completion!

Mon, 11/24/2008 - 07:50

This is a community sprint to finish up the SCBA site we started - all are welcome!

Last year we had a barnraising event to create a site for a local non-profit. We had a good time and got a lot of work done... but there is a little work left to complete the site.

Our "client" has arranged a space for us to use: map.

street view- so cool

The site is very close to done, there are a few features that still need to be implemented and some theming tweaks as well as some content creation and testing. I have an issue queue all set up so we can break up into teams, check-out issues and fix/do them.

We now have a date

December 7th 10am -4pm

Also, you can create an account at seadug.org and view the project by selecting it from the list.

Thanks!

Flag and Deploy

Fri, 11/21/2008 - 15:41

I have a rough beta beta of the site I'm building using the Flag module up if anyone wants to poke around at it.

http://heyrocker.com/listology/

It is a redo of a site a guy i know runs called listology.com where people make and maintain lists of things. If you create a new user, then on the node page you will see the option to add a node to your favorites, and on user profile pages you can "endorse" a user (make them your friend.) Endorsees/Endorsements are surfaced in blocks in the right sidebar on user profile pages, and favorites are surfaced in a tab on the profile pages. You can also choose Browse -> Favorites to get views of Most Recently Favorited and Most Favorited. This was all done with Flag's admin UI and Views integration. No custom code (except a line in the node template to place the link where I wanted it, which isn't necessary if you're less picky than I am.)

I'll be launching this site in a couple months, it's a personal project and should be cool. It has a solid community and there's more I want to do with it.

On another topic, after the meeting last night, some of us were talking about getting together for a lunch/afternoon session about the new version of Deploy that I'm buidling. If anyone is interested in that, let me know. I could host it here at Startpad in the conference room. The new version of deploy will included automated synching of content (nodes / users / comments) along with dependency management and various ways to create automated deployment (on a schedule, on insert, on demand, etc.) Good stuff. Leave a comment if you're itnerested and we'll get something scheduled.

Great meeting last night! Hope we can keep up the momentum!

Meeting Wiki Notes - Nov 20, 2008

Fri, 11/21/2008 - 00:38

This calendar event: http://groups.drupal.org/node/16097
Last meeting notes, Oct 16: http://groups.drupal.org/node/15952
Pizza provided by CivicActions.com
Beverages provided by StartPad.com

IRC: irc://irc.freenode.net/drupal-seattle or http://java.freenode.net/index.php?channel=drupal-seattle

Actual Meeting Agenda:

  • Introductions

  • Presentation by Bart Clarkson on his implementation of the new Museum of Flight web site http://museumofflight.org/

  • Business Items

    • Seattle Center for Book Arts (SCBA) Barnraising Wrap Up - Jared is getting people together to wrap up a few items from about a year ago - watch groups.drupal.org/seattle for more details (when, where, etc.) - should be sometime before Christmas

    • DrupalCamp http://groups.drupal.org/node/16280 - this will be our fourth camp, and we've decided we'd rather do it in the winter, going forward, than be inside on a summer weekend. DrupalCon is in March, so we thought it would be good to do it a bit before that, so people could test presentations. There's also a WordPress camp going on in that time frame -- could be interesting to do it at the same time, so people could go back and forth (and maybe some cross-camp sessions around content or other common concerns).

  • Questions, Answers, and Comments - What have you done lately, or what are you trying to do?

    • David: A note on getting taxonomy and gmap views to behave
    • Josh: Exporting Drupal's content to XMLRPC, so a static/Flash site can use Drupal's content in a disconnected way - can it be made more general, maybe with a view? Is it worth making it more general? Maybe as a way to get content into a legacy/enterprise set-up? Heyrocker: could be useful to have a file as intermediary in my deployment module sometimes, such as to get around a firewall. Could it be a way to dump the site for SVN or other version-control system?
    • Heyrocker: new version of deployment system is in development - can break off to hear about it - at the end
    • Jared and David: Let's talk about Komodo when we split up at the end - Komodo is an Integrated Development Environment, can be used for debugging Drupal (PHP debugging). Not free, but not expensive, and good software. Eclipse supposedly works for debugging, but it's tricky to get working. Zend studio is another PHP debugging environment, awesome but more expensive (recommend version 5 instead of 6).
    • Gregory: has anyone tried updating Drupal 5.x to 6.x? David: doing one now, not going too smoothly. Be sure to follow the instructions.
    • Gregory: anyone using Aquia's distro? Others: What is it? It's a pre-packaged Drupal distribution from Aquia, with a set of working modules, free to use. Heyrocker's company is using it, he's not sure why they went so strongly for it, but it does give you a nice starting point with some useful modules. Aquia is trying to get dev shops to partner with them, so the dev shop's clients will sign up with Aquia for support. However, if you add more modules, Aquia won't support the others, which could be kind of a support nightmare.
    • Larry: Need some resources for learning about Views 2 in Drupal 6. Gotchas from group: Need to save your changes before you leave the page. Beware of "update defaults" vs. "overwrite defaults". Jared suggests: http://learnbythedrop.com/drop/22 . Gregory suggests getting the upcoming "Using Drupal" book, by Lullubot, published by O'Reilly.
    • Larry: How to migrate from the developer platform to the live site? Backup and Migrate module, or use mysqldump, or PHPMyAdmin to dump the database. If you only want part of the database, you can use export/import in CCK and Views and Panels to move things back and forth.
    • Gregory: Anyone going to "Do It With Drupal?" Gregory is, apparently no one else, he will report back.
    • Gregrory is working on an SEO for Drupal presentation, hopes to present it here for practice sometime.
    • Heyrocker: Flag module is cool - allows users to flag (mark) content and users, very flexible, integrated with views
    • Gregory: Wants a module like "Link Field" that will allow the link to show the favicon from that link, instead of link text, or in addition
    • Bart: Any way to reuse images? Gregory: Asset module (not to be confused with Asset Manager or Asset Field). May be improved in Drupal 7 core as well. But it doesn't work well with ImageCache or Lightbox, or at least didn't used to, may be improved. And it is also complex, users will need training.
    • Gregory: Media Mover Alpha 1 has been released
    • Drupal 5 or Drupal 6, for new sites? Consensus is Drupal 6
  • Next meeting

    • Where? Methodologie, 720 Third Avenue, Suite 800 (3rd & Columbia)
    • When? December 18
  • Break out into smaller groups - after the meeting

    • heyrocker: new deployment system - very technical
    • Komodo

Remove HTML from webform results?

Thu, 11/20/2008 - 17:25

I have a webform with 2 select fields, and the values have some HTML in them to get a nifty hover effect, explaining more about the values.

But it sends the HTML with the form results, which isn't really what I want, and it's annoying for the person who actually uses the form results.

I've been trying to futz around with the additional processing option and not really getting anywhere. Basically I'm wandering into one of those corners of Drupal about which I know nothing. The usual Googling doesn't seem to be helping me any, and my usual "smash it with rocks" experimentation techniques aren't working either. :)

1) Is there a straightforward way to do what I'm looking for?

2) If not, any ideas for getting the hover working in some way that gets the markup out of the field values?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Drupal mentors or classes?

Wed, 11/19/2008 - 09:43

Hi--

I'm wondering if there are any Drupal mentors out there who can help a beginner with specific issues. I've got a couple of sites up and running, but I'm having trouble with customization, and frankly just don't know enough to make it work. Or am getting stuck on what are probably simple roadblocks. I'm willing to pay for it, not looking for a freebie.

I haven't found message boards too helpful, because they usually assume a level of familiarity and skill that I don't have.

I'm not looking for someone to take over, I'm just trying to learn more and get past some problems and frustrations with getting the site to look and behave the way we'd like it to.

I can be contacted at bradford@seanet.com

Which is more efficient - hook_form_alter or hook_menu_alter - for replacing a single page?

Fri, 10/31/2008 - 17:57

I'm replacing a single page from a contributed module. The page is currently rendered with a call to drupal_get_form() from a path like foo/%node/bar

My first thought was to replace the page with hook_form_alter, unset the form elements, and replace with my own content. But I thought that would require a whole lot of preprocessing on the form that I would just discard.

So, my next thought was to just redirect the path to my own function with hook_menu_alter. But, is this less efficient because of the dynamic nature of the path?

I'm just curious if anyone has experience with this.

Anyone else going to drupalcon DC?

BTW, there's no subway from Dulles Airport (IAD) to downtown, so cab or bus. Once inside the beltway the Metro is pretty good for getting around.
